Cats We’ve Helped: Nyla’s Story

Because of members like you, Nyla is home.

A few weeks ago, one of our local families was living every cat parent’s nightmare. Nyla, a sweet 12-year-old cat, had suffered a terrible accident that left her with a severe spiral fracture in her leg.

Nyla isn’t just anyone’s cat. She’s one of three cats in her family, and she and her biological brother have been inseparable since they were born in the same litter, 12 years of side-by-side companionship.

The vet’s estimate for a surgical repair was $4,000 to $8,000, not including hospitalization, medication, or follow-up care, and even then, her odds weren’t great. Nyla’s family had to make one of the hardest calls a pet owner can make: amputation, to give her the best shot at a comfortable, happy life.

Then came the question so many of our members know all too well: how do we make this happen?

A kind veterinarian at WNC Veterinary Hospital pointed Nyla’s family toward two names: Anna’s Hope Clinic in Mills River, and us.

Anna’s Hope Clinic, only two months into being open, went above and beyond to give Nyla the surgery and care she needed. And thanks to your membership dollars, Asheville Cat Weirdos was able to step in too, for a cat and a family we’d never met, simply because they needed us.

Nyla spent three days in the hospital. Her surgery was Wednesday, and by Thursday, she was home.

She’s still healing. She’s learning how to get around on three legs instead of four. But she’s home, she’s alive, and she’s still every bit herself: the same sweet, stubborn girl her family has loved for over a decade. And her brother, who has been by her side since the day they were born, gets to help her figure out this new chapter too.

Nyla’s family told us:

“Saving her life didn’t mean saving her leg. Sometimes saving a life means making an incredibly difficult decision and trusting there’s still a beautiful life waiting on the other side.”

This is exactly why our members exist.

Every $5, $10, $12 or $20 monthly membership goes straight into a fund that shows up for families like Nyla’s: at 2 a.m., in the middle of a crisis, when there’s no time to fundraise and no room for “no.” Your membership is what let us say yes.

Nyla’s story ended the way we hope every story can: her family got more time with her. That’s the whole point of what we do.

Thank you for being part of that. Thank you for being part of her journey home.

🐾 If you’re not yet a monthly member, joining today means the next Nyla gets a yes too.
