A Story of Hope and Help- Diamond Jade

Janet M. knew her kitty Diamond Jade wasn’t well when the cat suddenly started urinating outside the litter box and finally on Janet’s bed.

Something was obviously wrong, but Janet, who teaches part-time and is disabled, wouldn’t get paid for another eight weeks. Worried, she applied to the Emergency Veterinary Assistance Program (EVAP) of Asheville Cat Weirdos.

“I never had to apply for help from them before and I was really grateful to get it,” she said. “I went to Open Door because they accepted the voucher. They tested her urine, and did an ultrasound, and found she had a UTI and some crystals.”

Diamond Jade is a six-year-old cat named for the white spot on her neck shaped like a diamond. Originally abandoned by Janet’s neighbors, the cat gradually warmed to her. Then Janet’s 21-year-old cat died. That’s when she took the cat into her home.

“She was here when my 21-year-old had to be put down, and 3 months later our Corgi had to be put down. So, I don’t think I rescued her, it was more like she rescued me.

This week, Open Door treated Diamond Jade with antibiotics and sent Janet home with a solid treatment plan. Diamond Jade wasn’t so convinced it was a great experience

“She hasn’t come out from under the bed since we came home,” Janet said. “She is pretty stubborn.”

“I really couldn’t have made it eight weeks without taking her to the vet. I would have had no way to get the money. This really was a lifesaver for Diamond and for me. Thank you so much–I really appreciate the help.”
